अंग देशाच्या राजाकडून ब्राह्मणांचा अवमान झाल्याने समस्त ब्रह्मवृंद देश सोडून गेला. त्यामुळे राज्यात अवर्षण पडले. ऋश्यशृंग देशात येतील तर हे अवर्षण दूर होईल, असे इंद्रांनी अंग देशाचे राजे रोमपाद यांना सांगितले. रोमपादांनी काही गणिकांना पाठवून ऋश्यशृंग यांस आपल्या राज्यात आणले. त्याबरोबर भरपूर पर्जन्यवृष्टी होऊन राज्यातले अवर्षण दूर झाले. यामुळे कृतज्ञ होऊन रोमपादांनी आपली शांता नामक कन्या (वास्तविक ही दशरथाची पुत्री आहे.) ऋश्यशृंगास दिली. एक पुत्र होईपर्यंत ऋश्यशृंग अंग देशात राहिले. तदनंतर शांतेसह ते आपल्या आश्रमात परतले.  . Courtesan like women who were basically entertainers were often looked down as those of low virtue. The Indian term ganika is loosely translated as courtesans. Ganikas had a special relevance in India as they had prestige both in the royal court and the society, and they were patronized by the king. It was a cultural institution. The author traces initially the rise, development and fall of this institution. Later he elaborates the foreign ganikas. The next six chapters are devoted to salient features of the life of the ganikas, their training, their beauty accessories, their appearance in Indian literature etc. The latter half of the text has thirteen stories related to ganikas.
