बंधमुक्त होताना हे आत्मकथन आहे अर्थतज्ज्ञ आणि पद्मभूषण पुरस्कारप्राप्त पद्मा देसाई यांचे. लेखिकेचा जन्म १९३१ साली गुजरातमधील सुरत या ठिकाणी झाला. २०व्या शतकात एक सामान्य स्त्री ते संशोधक हा प्रवास त्यांच्यासाठी खूपच आव्हानात्मक आणि खडतर ठरला. आज एक अर्थतज्ज्ञ म्हणून परिचित असणाऱ्या पद्मा देसाई लहानपणापासूनच शालेय अभ्यासात हुशार होत्या. घरी कडक शिस्त असली तरी शिक्षणासाठी मात्र खूप पाठिंबा होता. त्यामुळे त्यांची शिक्षणातली रुची उत्तरोत्तर वाढत गेली. परंतु वैयक्तिक आयुष्य मात्र संकटे आणि वादळांनी व्यापलेले होते. मुंबई विद्यापिठातून त्यांनी एम.ए.ची पदवी संपादित केली आणि त्याच वेळी त्यांना लग्न करण्याचा निर्णय घ्यावा लागला. हा प्रेमविवाह होता. त्यातून त्यांच्या वाट्याला आली ती केवळ फसवणूक. हे लक्षात यायला त्यांना बराच वेळ लागला. त्या दरम्यान त्यांना शिक्षणानिमित्त अमेरिकेला जाण्याची संधी मिळाली. त्यांनी या संधीचे सोने केले. भारतीय संस्कृतीत वाढलेल्या लेखिकेला सुरुवातीला अमेरिकेतील संस्कृतीशी जुळवून घेणे खूपच कठीण गेले; परंतु लवकरच लेखिका त्या `ठिकाणी सरावली. तिथल्या संस्कृतीनेच लेखिकेला तिच्या वैवाहिक आयुष्याविषयी विचार करण्यास भाग पाडले. डॉक्टरेट करत असताना केब्रिज युनिव्हर्सिटीत राहत असताना, तसेच कोलंबिया कॉलेजमध्ये आलेले अनेक अनुभव लेखिकेने सांगितले आहेत. लेखिकेवर तिचे वडील, आई आणि काकी यांचा आयुष्यभर प्रभाव होता, हे जाणवते. विसाव्या शतकात भारतासारख्या देशात स्त्री म्हणून वैयक्तिक स्वातंत्र्यासाठी काही निर्णय घेणे तेवढे सोपे नव्हते. परंतु समाजाला, परंपरांना न जुमानता लेखिकेने अनेक क्रांतिकारी निर्णय घेतले. त्यांपैकी पहिला धर्मांतराचा आणि दुसरा अर्थतज्ज्ञ जगदीश भगवती यांच्याशी दुसरा विवाह करण्याचा. परंपरांच्या बंधनातून मुक्त होऊन स्वतःला सिद्ध करणाऱ्या या विदुषीचे आत्मचरित्र प्रत्येक स्त्रीसाठी प्रेरणादायक ठरेल.
